Suspected murder-suicide in upstate New York shakes community

Jasleen Kaur, 14 and Manjeet Kaur, 55 both of Castleton on the Hudson, were killed as a result of gunshot wounds sustained during a domestic incident that occurred at their residence at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 13, according to New York State Police.

State Police, in a Jan. 14, 2021 press release, confirmed the identities of the deceased in the January 13^th double murder suicide that occurred in the town of Schodack.

The police identified the shooter as 57-year-old Bhupinder Singh, also a resident of the home, who was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. All three of the deceased were found inside the home.

A fourth resident, 40-year-old Rashpal Kaur, sustained a gunshot wound to the arm, but was able to flee the residence. She is being treated at Albany Medical Center, her wounds are non-life-threatening, the police press release said.

This investigation has been carried out in conjunction with Schodack Police Department and the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office. State police also thanked Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office, Village of Nassau Police Department, Nassau Ambulance, Castleton Volunteer Ambulance, Mohawk Ambulance, and W.F. Bruen Rescue Squad for their assistance, as the investigation continues.

According to The Times Union, Bhupinder Singh was the owner of Pit Stop 66 in Hudson, a beverage store.

Jasleen was a student at Maple Hill Jr/Sr High School.

Schodack Central School District (Schodack CSD) set up a memorial outside the school for people to pay their tributes in memory of the teen whose life was cut short to brutally, and her family.

“Words cannot express the shock, pain and grief that we are feeling at this time. All of us are struggling to make sense of this loss of such a bright young life,” Superintendent of Schodack CSD, Jason Chevrier is quoted saying in a press release,

Parents in the district have set up a GoFundMe page in the name of ‘Ms Kaur’ to assist Jasleen’s mother during this difficult time to cover her immediate and longer-term living expenses.

As of Jan. 21, 2021, an amount of $2,080 had been collected toward meeting a goal of $100,000. Started by Joe Begany who is named as the organizer of the fundraiser on GoFundMe, and Elaine Theodore I snamed as the person responsible for making sure the funds get to Jasleen’s mother.

The GoFundMe website created around Jan. 20, 2021, says, “Jasleen Kaur was and will always be the beloved daughter of Rashpal Kaur.  Jasleen will forever be remembered as a good friend and a bright, diligent and promising student.  On 1/13/2021, 14-year-old Jasleen was taken from her mother, her friends and her Maple Hill High School community as a result of a brutal act of fatal domestic violence that also took Jasleen’s grandmother, Rashpal’s mother.  The donations that good souls provide will go only to Mrs. Kaur to cover her immediate and longer term living expenses.”
