Johns Hopkins appoints Dr. Kavita Sharma director of Heart Failure Department

Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Maryland, the premier research and education institution in the United States, announced July 28, 2020, it has appointed Dr. Kavita Sharma as director of its Heart Failure and Heart Transplant division.

“We are extremely excited to announce that Dr. Kavita Sharma @KSharmaMD has been selected to be the new Director of  Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation @hopkinsheart! ” the Johns Hopkins Division of Cardiology tweeted.

Dr. Sharma responded, “Honored to be named Director of HF/Heart Transplant … Grateful for amazing mentors, colleagues and team. Humbled to build on the legacy of giants …”

In her bio on the Johns Hopkins website, she is described as “An expert in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, cardiomyopathy, and general internal medicine, heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, and right heart catheterization.”

She received her medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine and did her residency at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she won several Fellowships from 2011 to 2015.

As a cardiologist specializing in advanced heart failure, Dr. Sharma’s clinical interests include advanced heart failure diagnosis and management, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support including left ventricular assist devices.

She has a specialized interest in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), and directs one of the largest programs in the country dedicated to caring for patients with this condition.

She is the principal investigator of numerous clinical and translational trials in HFpEF and leads a team of nurses, research coordinators, and fellows-in-training in this multi-faceted program.

She is an invited speaker at national meetings in topic areas covering advanced heart failure and HFpEF. Dr. Sharma is a member of the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, the Heart Failure Society of America, and the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, her biography says.
