Dr. Brian Pereira appointed to AIF’s Board

The American India Foundation (AIF) has appointed distinguished biopharmaceutical and healthcare leader Dr. Brian J. G. Pereira, MD, to their Board.

Venkat Srinivasan, Vice Chair, AIF and Chair, Finance Committee said in a statement,  “A celebrated expert clinician and successful entrepreneur, Brian adds considerable strength and a new dimension to the Board which will serve AIF very well in the coming years. Brian and Sunita, herself a neonatal physician, are passionate philanthropists committed to AIF’s secular values and helping the underserved everywhere, especially in India.”

On his appointment, Pereira stated, “AIF is unique in being secular and its mission is to step up and provide assistance where it is needed the most.  As a result, AIF deploys its human and financial capital across a spectrum of unmet needs among those who need it the most – women and children, migrant workers, differently-abled individuals and marginalized members of Indian society.”

Pereira is a veteran biopharmaceutical and healthcare leader with experience in financing and growing companies. He has been President & CEO and member of the Board of Directors of Visterra, Inc. since 2013 and continues to serve in this role after the acquisition by Otsuka in August 2018.

He previously served as President & CEO of AMAG Pharmaceuticals where he raised four financing rounds at increasing valuations and built the clinical development, manufacturing, supply chain and commercial infrastructure for Feraheme. Prior to AMAG Pharmaceuticals, he held senior roles at Tufts Medical Center, including President and CEO of a Tufts Medical Center Physician Organization and interim COO.

Pereira is Executive Chairman of Abeona Therapeutics and Chairman of the Board of Africa Healthcare Network. He also serves on the Boards of KalVista Pharmaceuticals and Cullinan Pearl Corp.  He has previously served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of NephroPlus, Opsonix. and Biodel, and a member of the Board of Directors of several private and public companies including AMAG Pharmaceuticals, Satellite Healthcare, Tengion and Aksys.

He was previously the Chairman of the Board of the Harvard-MIT Biomedical Enterprise Program and President and Board member of the National Kidney Foundation.  He is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and has authored over 200 published scientific articles. He received his medical degree (MBBS) from St. John’s Medical College, MD (Medicine) and DM (Nephrology) from the Post Graduate Institute and MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
