“The Color Purple”, musical at Drury Lane Theatre, Illinois

I love the musicals at Drury Lane Theatre.

Recently, we had a great time with the colorful show, The Color Purple, a musical of the heroic journey of an African-American woman in rural Georgia of Southern America.

The story was taken from the early 1900s of slavery in the black community, as Celie navigates her adoration for her missionary sister and her children, struggling in her life with an abusive relationship and her own spirituality.

A two-and-a-half-hour, rated PG-13 show, it is running through November at Drury Lane Theatre.

This inspiring musical is based on the 1982 novel by Alice Walker and Warner Bros Entertainment motion picture, also a Tony Award winner for the Best Revival of Musical.

Celie played her central role with warmth, vulnerability and spiritual power.

Directed by Lili-Anne Brown, book by Marsha Norman and melodious music provided by Brenda Russel, Allie Willis and Stephan Bray, this genuine and marvelous show is wonderfully staged and choreographed.

The Drury Lane Theatre in Oak Brook Terrace is truly a hidden gem at the convenient intersection of Roosevelt and Butterfield.

Showcasing some of the finest family-friendly entertainment available, it’s a nice place to relax and snap a few pictures before the performance begins. I would happily recommend a show at this theater to families.

This season, Drury Lane’s upcoming program includes the magical musical for all ages, “Mary Poppins”, and the beautifully captivating Gershwin musical “An American in Paris”.
