2023 is going to be a unique year. For the first time ever, we will see 10 new star children coming in to find a place in the sun that is Hindi cinema. This has never happened before in any single year!

Youngsters or young actor combinations, in theory, are supposed to bring in big success in cinema: from Sawan Bhadon (1970)’s Navin Nischol and Rekha to Bobby (1973)’s Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia downwards, new star pairs or even single debutant heroes or heroines have often given us huge hits on par with those from superstars. Yes, no actor alone brings success—the script, direction and overall content decides that!—but fresh talent has always been known to enhance the success quotient.

Bobby, Love Story, Hero, Betaab, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Maine Pyar Kiya, Phool Aur Kaante, Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai et al have been among the top or topmost hits of their respective years, and, interestingly, most of them have had new faces that have come from within the industry.

So is a film family base a guarantee of success? Clearly, not, for had that been the be-all and end-all of success, we would not have had a Zayed Khan, a Soha Ali Khan, a Rinke Khanna or an Arya Babbar among dozens of others—failing to make it big.

As a phenomenon across professions, following one’s parents is time-honored, but it is competence alone that determines your success. R.D. Burman and lyricist Sameer, Anu Malik, Hrithik Roshan, Kajol. Karisma and Kareena Kapoor (Khan), Shahid Kapoor, Amjad Khan, lyricist-writer Javed Akhtar and a few more are among those rare names that went beyond their parents in fame, success or caliber.

Yes, it is easier maybe to get breaks if one is an “insider”—Karan Johar (himself the son of producer Yash Johar) alone has introduced a bevy of film industry-based protégés (Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Ananya Panday, Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, directors Abhishek Verman, Karan Malhotra and Ayan Mukerji among them), but continued success is assured only when one has talent and a mass-connect.

Here then are the 10 newcomers that will arrive in 2023 whose roots lie within the Hindi film industry.

Here’s hoping that all these kids have a great innings and help boost the fortunes of Hindi cinema that have sagged in the last few years.
